Funeral Speech Examples
A funeral speech, or tribute, is a chance to honour someone you loved and to help everyone gathered hold their memory close. There is no single right way to do it. Speak from the heart, keep it simple, and don't worry about being polished — the people listening understand. In South Africa, tributes are often shared at the church or chapel service and again at the home or graveside, and they may move naturally between English and a home language such as isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans or isiXhosa; use whatever feels most true to your family. Many families also weave in a favourite Scripture, hymn or song. The examples below are starting points only. Swap the [placeholders] for real names and memories, keep what fits, and cut what doesn't. Aim for two to three minutes when read aloud (roughly 100 to 160 words is plenty). If grief makes your voice unsteady, that is alright — pause, breathe, and ask someone to stand beside you.
